Hong Kong police have stepped up security around the consulates and officials of countries involved in the Middle East conflict, the South China Morning Post has learned.
A source said officers had increased patrols at the consulates as a precaution since the outbreak of the conflict.
The ongoing war has disrupted global supply chains, driven up oil prices and fuelled concerns that rising energy costs would stoke inflation and cripple global growth, as US President Donald Trump warned the war could last four to five weeks.
The insider added that personnel from Hong Kong police’s counterterrorism response unit, along with officers from the relevant police districts, were involved in guarding the consulates.
“If necessary, we will also assess the security risks of public events involving these officials to determine whether they are high-risk activities and if additional protection is required,” he said.
