A Hong Kong man jailed for allegedly poisoning a pastor’s daughter he was infatuated with was freed on Thursday after a judge overturned his conviction, ruling that his recorded confession had been coerced under threat.
The High Court found that Ye Wen-fei, 29, admitted to poisoning the woman with sodium nitrate in 2024 only after her father, a pastor at the NGO Agapeministry, intimidated him into admitting the alleged crime.
Ye was released immediately after the judge overturned his conviction and two-year jail term.
The pastor, who calls himself Moses and is surnamed Law, had warned Ye he would be sent to prison if he did not admit to the alleged crime.
During the confrontation, he warned Ye: “You better ‘wash you a**’ and be ready to stay in prison.”
He even said: “Mate, do not mess with me – Moses Law. If I did not believe in Jesus, I would have knocked you down. You would have at least broken a few bones and had a few teeth taken out.”
