Hong Kong experiences an ‘exceptionally warm’ April

Hong Kong’s weather was exceptionally warm last month, with the city recording its second highest mean temperature for April, the Hong Kong Observatory said Tuesday.

The HKO said the city’s monthly mean temperature of 25.5 C, monthly mean minimum temperature of 23.8 C, and monthly mean maximum temperature of 27.9 C were all the second highest on record for April.

It said the exceptionally warm weather was mainly due to warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures and a stronger-than-usual southerly flow in the lower atmosphere over the northern part of the South China Sea.

The HKO also said that the monthly rainfall for April was 160.4 millimeters, about 5 percent above the normal level of 153 millimeters.

The accumulated rainfall recorded for the first four months of the year was 359.6 millimeters, also about 20 percent above the normal of 300.4 millimeters for the same period, it added.
