It’s been just over 24 hours since Hong Kong’s worst fire disaster broke out yesterday, claiming the lives of 55 people, with the death toll likely to rise further as search and rescue efforts continue. In light of this tragedy, some events across Hong Kong that were originally planned for this weekend have been cancelled or otherwise affected – refer to the list below before you leg it out the door over the next couple of days.
Oxfam Trailwalker 2025
In a Facebook post, Oxfam announced that its fundraising hiking event the Oxfam Trailwalker, which was supposed to run from November 28 to 30, will be cancelled to allow the government to better allocate their resources to the crisis at hand. Oxfam has also decided to donate all the public funds gathered for this year’s Trailwalker event in aid of affected Tai Po residents.
Arts in the Park Night Parade
This annual performance which takes over the streets of Causeway Bay has decided not to proceed with the Standard Chartered Arts in the Park 2025. According to the event’s website, the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation will cancel the event, originally slated for November 29 and 30. There is no word on whether there will be any rescheduling.
MAMA Awards 2025
The large-scale South Korean music awards ceremony has already seen artists departing for Hong Kong, so MAMA will not be cancelled. However, the event will be held with a more solemn atmosphere that’s more toned down than the usual high-octane ceremony. Stage designs and performances will be adjusted to remain sensitive to Hong Kong, so pyrotechnics and flame-like special effects will be taken out, for example.
Despite earlier rumours that Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh are pulling out of their presenter roles, MAMA’s organiser has confirmed that both film stars will still be in attendance. Instead, the script and flow of the awards will be changed to “offer comfort” to the victims of the Tai Poi fire, and attendees can expect to observe a minute of silence at the opening of the show. The red carpet event scheduled for tomorrow, November 28, will be cancelled.
Jace Chan’s concert sales
Hong Kong singer Jace Chan was supposed to have general public tickets for her upcoming concert Jace World launch tomorrow, but has decided to postpone the sales. She writes on an Instagram Story, ‘It’s probably not a suitable time to go ahead with the ticketing event so I have decided to postpone Friday’s sale’. The public sale was originally scheduled for November 28. Jace’s concert itself is set for February 2026, and will likely go ahead as planned.
Political forums and campaigns
It’s not likely to affect the weekend plans of the regular cityslicker, but several public forums and political campaigning events, related to the upcoming December 7 elections, have been cancelled or suspended in light of the Tai Po tragedy.
