
16th May 2025 – (Seoul) The Secretary for Education, Dr Choi Yuk-lin, concluded a productive visit to South Korea today, where she engaged in high-level discussions aimed at strengthening ties between Hong Kong and Korea in the field of higher education. During her visit to Seoul National University (SNU), Dr Choi met with the university’s president, Dr Ryu Hong Lim, to explore opportunities for deeper collaboration and to promote Hong Kong’s position as a leading international education hub under the “Study in Hong Kong” initiative.
Dr Choi highlighted the diverse and internationalised nature of Hong Kong’s post-secondary education sector, underscoring the efforts of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government to enhance its global standing. She noted that Hong Kong has implemented measures such as hosting international education conferences and exhibitions, as well as offering scholarships to attract overseas students.
Dr Choi also introduced the Northern Metropolis University Town project, an ambitious initiative aimed at fostering branded academic programmes, research collaborations, and exchange projects with top institutions from Mainland China and overseas. This innovative effort is designed to position Hong Kong as a centre for cutting-edge education and research.
During her meeting with SNU leadership, Dr Choi invited Korean universities to participate in upcoming education mega-events in Hong Kong, including the Learning and Teaching Expo during Digital Education Week in July and the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education Conference and Exhibition in February 2024. She encouraged Korean students to consider studying in Hong Kong or participating in short-term exchange programmes, underscoring the city’s vibrant academic and cultural environment.
In addition to her engagements at SNU, Dr Choi met with Hong Kong students currently studying at the university to gain insights into their experiences. She encouraged them to return to Hong Kong after completing their studies to contribute to the city’s development.
Dr Choi’s visit also included courtesy calls to Chinese diplomatic representatives in Korea. She met with the Chinese Ambassador to Korea, Mr Dai Bing, and the Consul General of China in Jeju, Mr Chen Jianjun, to provide updates on Hong Kong’s latest education policies.
On 15th May, Dr Choi attended a side event of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Education Ministerial Meeting, where she visited an elementary school in Jeju to learn about its innovative approaches to AI and digital education.
Dr Choi’s visit to Korea concluded today, and she is set to travel to the United Kingdom tomorrow to continue promoting Hong Kong’s educational initiatives and international partnerships.
