A domestic helper has been jailed for 27 months for failing to secure her car on a slope in a Hong Kong nightlife district, leading to the death of a French woman and injuring seven others.
Deputy District Judge Timothy Harry Casewell found Magsino Reshielle Lagurin, 48, guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and serious bodily harm.
The court heard that Lagurin, who came to Hong Kong in 2009 and obtained a driving licence four years later, had worked for the same employer since her arrival and was allowed to drive the family’s car.
On December 10, 2021, she parked the vehicle at the junction of Staunton Street and Peel Street in Central and stepped out. Moments later, the car began moving downhill, colliding with eight pedestrians who were standing outside bars and restaurants.
Among the victims was 27-year-old French national Elodie Ma, who died from her injuries.
