Hong Kong’s Court of Appeal has rejected the appeal of Swedish businessman Patrik Tobias Ekstrom, confirming his convictions for raping his Nepalese domestic helper and committing non‑consensual buggery, Dimsum Daily reports.
He was ordered back to prison to complete his seven‑year sentence, after being released on bail pending appeal.
Ekstrom, in his late thirties, was unanimously found guilty by a seven‑member jury in August 2024 for an incident at his Shek O home on 27 October 2022. The jury accepted the victim’s account that he forced her into his bedroom after returning home intoxicated, while his wife and three children were overseas.
On appeal, his counsel argued that the trial judge failed to give adequate directions regarding references to an alleged prior assault on another domestic worker, and challenged the admission of voice messages the victim sent to Ekstrom’s wife shortly after the incident.
The three‑judge panel dismissed these claims, noting that the trial judge had given detailed and balanced directions on consent and credibility, and that the jury’s verdict was safe.
Ekstrom maintained the encounter was consensual and claimed he and the victim had been intimate previously. He further alleged she sought his help to repay a loan during the encounter.
At sentencing, the trial judge cited a psychological assessment placing Ekstrom at the high end of a moderate risk of sexual reoffending.
