Hong Kong confirms 10th locally acquired case of chikungunya fever

Hong Kong has recorded one additional locally acquired case of chikungunya fever involving a woman who went hiking in Tsing Yi, bringing the total number of confirmed local cases of the mosquito-borne disease this year to 10.

The Centre for Health Protection said on Saturday that it had recorded a new local case as of 5pm, involving a 67-year-old woman living in Kwai Tsing district.

According to the centre, a preliminary investigation found that the woman developed joint pain and a fever on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, followed by a rash on Friday.

She attended the accident and emergency department of Princess Margaret Hospital in Lai Chi Kok on Friday. The woman was in stable condition and her blood sample tested positive for the chikungunya virus upon laboratory testing.

She had no travel history during the incubation period and the case was classified as local.

According to the centre, the woman hiked along the Tsing Yi Nature Trails with a household contact on November 29. Apart from that, no overlap was found between her activities during the incubation period and the locations visited by previously confirmed patients.
