Storm Goretti has blanketed parts of the United Kingdom in snow
East Midlands Airport has closed its runway temporarily due to heavy snow from Storm Goretti.
The airport said in a post on social media in the early hours of Friday, January 9, that its teams are working hard to clear the runway from snow as quickly as possible.
Road and air travel have been disrupted by snow as Storm Goretti blankets parts of the United Kingdom.
“Flights will resume as soon as it is safe to do so but some delays are expected,” the post read.
Passengers were told to check with the airline they are travelling on for the latest information on their flights.
Travel has been disrupted across much of the country as Storm Goretti hit UK on Thursday evening. The storm brought strong winds, with gusts as strong as 98mph recorded at St Mary’s Airport on the Isles of Scilly.
The Met Office upgraded its wind warning for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly from amber to red, saying the weather poses a “danger to life”.
The East Midlands was issued an ‘amber’ warning for snow on Friday. Areas affected include: Derby, Derbyshire, Leicester, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and Rutland.
The forecaster said “this warning has a medium likelihood and a medium impact”.
“Heavy snow will affect Wales, the Midlands and parts of northern England overnight and through Friday morning. This multi-hazard event will bring significant disruption to many,” said Met Office Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong.
He said accumulations of 10-15 cm are likely widely over Wales and the Midlands, with 20-30 cm possible in some places, especially higher ground in Wales and the Peak District.
“An Amber warning has been issued where the greatest risk of disruption is likely on Thursday night into Friday morning. This is a complex spell of severe weather and I’d advise people in the warning areas to keep up to date with the forecast and messages from local authorities,” Armstrong added.
National Highways also issued an amber severe weather warning for snowfall in the East Midlands from 6pm on Thursday, January 8, until 9am on Friday, January 9.
