German Ambassador highlights historic football bond with Ghana ahead of German-Ghana frendlies

By: Sarah Baafi

The deep-rooted football relationship between Ghana and Germany took center stage on Friday, March 13, 2026 as Ambassador Frederik Landshöft, German Ambassador to Ghana, visited the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to discuss collaboration and celebrate the shared love of the game.

The diplomat highlighted the upcoming friendly match between Ghana and Germany on March 30, a precursor to the World Cup, recalling the memorable 2-2 draw between the two nations in the 2014 tournament, considered by many experts as one of the best games of that World Cup.

“This match is more than just a game,” Ambassador Landshöft said. “It is a celebration of the long-standing football ties between our nations, a connection that goes beyond the pitch.”

Ambassador Landshöft also spotlighted Ghanaian-German players and football icons contributing to the sport in Ghana. Gerald Asamoah, the first African-German player in Germany’s national team, recently opened a football academy at the German International School in Accra.

Petra Lander, a member of Germany’s first European Championship-winning women’s team in the late 1980s, is leading girls’ football initiatives in northern Ghana.

The ambassador emphasized that the March 30 public viewing event at his residence will not only celebrate football but also highlight stories of cross-cultural collaboration, inspiring young players and fans alike.

Football, as Ambassador Landshöft noted, “is a bridge connecting our peoples, reflecting friendship, talent, and shared passion that transcends borders.”

As anticipation builds toward the friendly match, Ghanaian fans and German supporters alike are gearing up for a celebration of sportsmanship, history, and a partnership that continues to grow, both on and off the field.
