Foreign secretary Vikram Misri to visit China on January 26

NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs (MEA) on Thursday said that foreign secretary Vikram Misri will begin his two-day visit to China starting Sunday.
The MEA said that Misri’s visit from January 26 to Janury 27 is centred around attending the foreign secretary-vice minister mechanism meeting.
The MEA further said that this bilateral mechanism’s revival is due to a leadership-level agreement to explore future directions for India-China relations, including political, economic, and people-to-people interactions.
Misri will be discussing visas issue, resumption of direct flights and an inclusive economic partnership besides early de-escalation of the border standoff.
This marks the second significant Indian diplomatic visit to China within approximately six weeks. Earlier, National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval’s visited Beijing, where he engaged in discussions with Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi within the Special Representatives (SR) dialogue framework regarding boundary matters.
The restoration of the SR dialogue mechanism and similar formats was established during Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping’s meeting in Kazan on October 23.
During their 50-minute discussion, Modi highlighted the significance of appropriately addressing differences and disputes, stressing the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity along border regions.
The trip comes after a major breakthrough in border disengagement at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) following the deadly 2020 Galwan Valley clash.
