Father’s Day 2025: 14 important health tests every dad over 60 should take – Lifestyle News

Our fathers have always been our biggest support system—strong, caring, and always putting us first. But as they grow older, especially after the age of 60, it becomes important to look after their health. Many dads often ignore regular check-ups, brushing aside fatigue, joint pain, or minor health changes. However, simple and routine health tests can detect silent problems early and prevent major complications later. This Father’s Day, give them the gift of good health by making sure they get a few important medical check-ups.

Dr. Suranjit Chatterjee, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, shares a list of simple and essential tests that can help detect early health problems and keep our dads healthy and active.

“After 60, the risk of heart problems, diabetes, and other illnesses increases. But many of these can be caught early and managed well with regular check-ups,” says Dr Chatterjee.

Here’s a list of tests every super dad should consider:

1. Fasting Blood Sugar

This test checks blood sugar after not eating for 8 hours. It helps find early signs of diabetes.

2. HbA1c

This test shows the average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months, giving a better picture of sugar control.

3. Liver Function Test (LFT)

This checks if the liver is working properly. It can detect problems like fatty liver or damage due to age.

4. Kidney Function Test

The KFT test reveals how well the kidneys are cleaning the blood. Kidney issues are common with age and often have no early symptoms.

5. Lipid Profile

This test checks cholesterol levels (good and bad cholesterol). It helps in knowing the risk of heart disease.

6. Serum Total PSA

A simple blood test to check the prostate gland can show early signs of prostate problems or cancer.

7. TSH (Thyroid Test)

It checks if the thyroid gland is working fine. Low or high thyroid can cause tiredness, weight gain, or mood swings.

8. Vitamin D (25-OH)

Vitamin D is important for bones and immunity. Older people often have low levels, especially if they stay indoors.

9. Vitamin B12

This vitamin is needed for energy and brain health. Low levels can cause weakness or tingling in the hands and feet.

10. ECG (Electrocardiogram)

This test checks the heart’s rhythm and can spot early signs of heart issues.

11. Chest X-ray

Useful for dads who have smoked or had breathing problems. It shows if the lungs and heart are healthy.

12. Ultrasound – Whole Abdomen

A painless scan that looks at the liver, kidneys, bladder, and other organs to check if everything is okay.

13. Treadmill Test (TMT)

This test shows how the heart works during exercise and can spot blocked arteries.

14. Echocardiogram (Echo)

Like an ultrasound of the heart. It checks how the heart muscles and valves are working.

“These tests are simple and safe. Doing them once a year can prevent serious health problems later,” says Dr Chatterjee.

This Father’s Day, let’s remind our dads to take care of themselves too. A small step today can help them stay strong for years to come.
