Blake Lively is once again at the center of fan controversy—this time for a hat. A clip from her new film, Another Simple Favor, has gone viral for an enormous, extravagant sunhat she is wearing during a dramatic entrance. Fans online are mocking the headwear as “ridiculous,” and many are convinced Lively herself is to blame.
Blake Lively faces backlash over hat in Another Simple Favor
In the Another Simple Favor scene, Blake Lively’s character, Emily Nelson, descends a grand staircase in a luxurious Italian setting while sporting a massive, wide-brimmed sunhat. The exaggerated accessory immediately caught viewers’ attention, with a fan calling it “ridiculous” and others joking that it looked like a parody prop.
Fans took to social media to share their reactions, with one X (formerly Twitter) user writing, “If I knew nothing about the movie at all and saw the poster…the size of blake lively’s hat would lead me to believe that it’s a parody movie of some kind.” Another stated, “Blake Lively really thinks she’s Carrie Bradshaw in that ridiculous hat. Another Simple Favor.” One TikTok user also jokingly wrote, “I need an SNL skit where the hat keeps growing,” with another stating, “4 crew members starved because of that hat.”
Many even accused Lively of being the one behind this choice. Turns out, the speculation was correct. At the SXSW Film & TV Festival premiere in March, Lively admitted she personally picked out the hat from a small shop in Capri, Italy, while filming. “That crazy, beautiful hat was just a hat they sell in the store. Humans buy that! It’s amazing,” she quipped. (via People)
Renée Ehrlich Kalfus, the costume designer for Another Simple Favor, told People that while they initially had smaller hats prepared, Lively discovered the now-infamous oversized one in a shop. “We had smaller hats, and she somehow found that one in the corner of this tiny little place,” Kalfus said.
She added, “Those are the sort of serendipitous moments that come about. If you stay flexible and open and you see something, why not?” Director Paul Feig also praised Lively’s commitment to the look, calling her a “f—ing movie star” for how she maneuvered the hat in the scene and navigated the streets with it.
