After nearly a decade of development, Lily Collins is finally bringing a passion project to the big screen. The Emily in Paris star will play the iconic Audrey Hepburn in an upcoming film that explores the making of the beloved 1961 rom-com Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Lily Collins to play Audrey Hepburn in movie about Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Lily Collins will headline the upcoming movie, which draws from Sam Wasson’s popular book Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M.: Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and the Dawn of the Modern Woman. The project explores the behind-the-scenes story of the beloved romantic comedy Breakfast at Tiffany’s and the cultural shift it helped spark.
Alena Smith, creator of the Apple series Dickinson, has written the screenplay. The book is described as a comprehensive account of the film’s production, examining the creative forces that shaped it, including writer Truman Capote, director Blake Edwards, costumer Edith Head, and, at its center, Audrey Hepburn.
Released in 1961, Breakfast at Tiffany’s featured Hepburn as Holly Golightly, a free-spirited New Yorker who falls for her neighbor Paul Varjak, played by George Peppard. The film also featured Mickey Rooney, Patricia Neal, Buddy Ebsen, and Martin Balsam.
Now, the upcoming film will spotlight the turbulent journey behind the making of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. According to Wasson’s book, the production faced preproduction tensions, including Capote’s reported desire for Marilyn Monroe to play the central role. He allegedly felt that Paramount “double-crossed” him and ended up casting Hepburn. Despite the friction, Hepburn’s performance ultimately helped transform the film into a cinematic touchstone and established her as a global fashion and cultural icon.
Lily Collins, who has often expressed admiration for Hepburn and drawn comparisons for her resemblance to the late Oscar winner, shared the news on Instagram.
With Lily Collins now officially attached, the long-awaited film about Hepburn and Breakfast at Tiffany’s is moving closer to the screen.
