Get your shovels ready: a second round of snow is quickly approaching following the Feb. 23 blizzard that rocked New England.
The National Weather Service is tracking a system that may drop another 1 to 3 inches of snow throughout Maine and New Hampshire on Wednesday, Feb. 25, affecting the morning commute.
“We’re most concerned with snow-covered roads and slippery travel,” said Chris Legrow, an NWS meteorologist based in Gray, Maine.
At present, the forecast calls for light, fluffy snow, adding to existing accumulation in New England’s most snowfall-heavy winter in years.
How much snow fell in Seacoast, southern Maine during Monday’s blizzard?
A resident shovels out during the Feb. 23 blizzard as heavy snow and strong winds sweep across the Seacoast.
Forecasters predicted between 8 to 12 inches of snow would fall in the Seacoast and southern Maine during Monday’s blizzard, a system that crushed snowfall records in Rhode Island not seen since the famed Blizzard of ‘78. According to Legrow, the entire storm brought totals of nearly 38 inches of snow in some parts of Rhode Island.
Locally, the impacts were far less significant, and Legrow reported most communities saw closer to 8 to 10 inches of snow rather than a full foot, though wind gusts between 40 and 70 mph pummeled the coastline.
Midday reports to the National Weather Service showed 9.5 inches of snow in Dover, along with 9 inches in Stratham, 8.3 inches in Durham, 8 inches in North Hampton, 6.9 inches in Kittery, and 5.1 inches at Portsmouth International Airport at Pease. Meteorologists in Gray are currently working to compile updated full-day snowfall totals throughout Maine and New Hampshire from the Monday storm.
Third snowstorm projected to miss Seacoast, southern Maine
A third snowstorm could hit the East Coast Thursday night into Friday morning, though Legrow stated it may only affect southern New England, if it reaches the region at all.
“Model trends make it look like it may stay south,” he said.
