Domestic helper gets 5 months’ jail in Hong Kong for abusing 11-month-old baby

A domestic helper has been sentenced to five months in jail for abusing an 11‑month‑old baby in her employer’s home in Hong Kong.

Eastern Court on Friday heard the guilty plea of the 41-year-old helper, who admitted to ill-treating the baby at a flat in Happy Valley on November 11 last year.

The defendant’s full name was concealed, and she was identified only as “AJB” in court proceedings.

In mitigation, her lawyer said she was a first-time helper from the Philippines who had struggled to adapt to her new environment or cope with work stress.

He added that his client was “very sorry to the victim and also the family”.

Principal Magistrate David Cheung Chi-wai stressed that the offence was serious and involved a breach of trust.

「香港義工獎頒獎禮暨論壇2025」今日（9日）舉行，表揚一眾義工的付出和貢獻。香港賽馬會慈善信託基金自2022年起策劃及捐助「賽馬會眾心行善」計劃，並透過計劃持續支持「香港義工獎」，以鼓勵大眾參與義工服務，促進社會關懷文化。由民青局聯同義務工作發展局合辦的「香港義工獎頒獎禮暨論壇2025」，主禮嘉賓包括行政長官夫人暨義工總領袖李林麗嬋、民青局副局長梁宏正、馬會董事胡家驃及義務工作發展局主席彭韻僖。胡家驃致辭時表示，馬會早於上世紀七十年代起已與義務工作發展局攜手合作，推廣義工服務發展。近年馬會主導開展「賽馬會眾心行善」計劃，致力推廣「義工影響力」的理念，並支持增設多個義工奬項，更廣泛地肯定不同界別的貢獻，促進義務工作的可持續發展。他亦提到，馬會義工隊積極參與各項服務，回饋社會，包括為早前圓滿舉行的第十五屆全國運動會提供支援，期望義工精神代代相傳，溫暖全港。由馬會職員組成的義工隊一向積極服務社群，其2024年的總服務時數高達25,000小時，受惠人數超過74萬，並於在本屆香港義工獎榮獲「傑出企業獎」及「企業 – 年度十大最高義工時數獎」，充份肯定了馬會義工隊的貢獻。「賽馬會眾心行善」計劃推出的一站式整合平台，至今吸引超過23,000名義工參與，累計服務時數近27萬小時。自2023年起，馬會透過「賽馬會眾心行善」計劃捐助的專屬獎項包括「賽馬會眾心行善傑出常青義工獎」、「賽馬會眾心行善傑出愛心學校獎」、「賽馬會眾心行善常青義工時數獎」、「賽馬會眾心行善躍晉義工時數獎」以及「賽馬會眾心行善愛心學校」，以肯定義工的長期付出。此外，馬會亦支持「賽馬會眾心行善傑出躍晉義工獎」，特別鼓勵初次參與或重返義工行列的市民，表彰他們在推動義務工作方面的出色表現。「賽馬會眾心行善」計劃夥拍12個合作夥伴，鼓勵社會大眾，尤其中小學生、家庭、在職人士、50+及退休人士等，造福社群，並透過「眾心行善平台」夥拍香港六大義工配對平台，讓義工可搜尋不同的義工服務，整合參與及記錄各個服務活動。一如其他由馬會捐助的慈善項目，馬會對以上推動本地義工服務發展項目的支持，有賴其獨特的綜合營運模式，把賽馬及有節制體育博彩收入，轉化成稅款、慈善捐款及就業機會，貢獻香港。 Source link
