Kevin Smith shared an exciting update for Dogma 2, the long-awaited sequel to 1999’s Dogma.
The fantasy comedy starred Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as Loki and Bartleby, two fallen angels who embark on a journey to New Jersey to exploit a loophole in the Catholic Church that could be their way back into heaven. Smith has been touring the country, bringing Dogma to theaters in celebration of its 25th anniversary rerelease.
“It’s been a joy to stand there, with the movie, for the last two months because it’s aged incredibly well,” Smith told ComingSoon in an exclusive interview about the Dogma rerelease.
Smith recently brought Dogma to the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, the site where the original screened in 1999. While in Cannes, Smith had a revelation that inspired him to explore plans for a sequel.
What are Kevin Smith’s plans for Dogma 2?
While speaking with Deadline, Smith revealed he never had plans to return to the French film festival, believing that the “Cannes-worthy portion” concluded. The strong reception to Dogma at the 2025 festival has motivated Smith to work on Dogma 2 and bring it back to Cannes in a few years, under one condition.
“It was the 78th edition this year, and so I was like, ‘You know what? I wanna come back on the 80th, or the 81st at the latest with the Dogma sequel, like that’s a Cannes-worthy movie,” Smith said. “And so, I said that on stage when I was intro-ing and everybody applauded, and [festival director] Thierry Frémaux was on stage with me, and he adds, ‘If it is good,’ and I was like, ‘Fair enough, if it’s good, yes.’”
Smith added that he finally “cracked the story” for the sequel after pondering it for six months.
Part of what made Dogma so special was its star-studded cast, which included Damon, Affleck, Linda Fiorentino, Salma Hayek, Jason Lee, Jason Mewes, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, and George Carlin. Will any of these actors return for Dogma 2? While Smith will welcome their returns, he can make the sequel without them.
“I will set a place at the table for everyone who was in the first movie who is still alive. Sadly, Alan and George won’t be able to join us, but I’ll set a place at the table for all of them. If they want to come back, they’ll have a role to play, but if not, no harm, no foul,” Smith explained. “The story I’m telling can definitely make use of everybody who is in Dogma, but I can also tell it without. So, that makes me pretty excited to go forward.”
The Dogma rerelease returns to theaters in the United States on June 5.
