26th December 2024 – (Hong Kong) A troubling incident involving a mainland Chinese tourist sleeping on the streets of Hong Kong has recently surfaced online, sparking significant debate. Video footage shows the tourist being confronted and evicted by a local man, leading to a physical altercation that resulted in the tourist requiring medical assistance.
The mainland tourist shared a video on social media with the caption, “Attacked by extremists in Hong Kong at midnight, and I have reported to the police.” The footage reveals the moment he was approached by the local man, who kicked away the tourist’s belongings and subsequently engaged in a heated argument. The tourist, clearly distressed, pleaded with the local to refrain from physical violence, countering with the question, “Am I sleeping in your home?”
The altercation escalated, with both parties exchanging insults. The local man insisted that the tourist had no right to leave personal items in a public space. Following the confrontation, the tourist posted a second video, capturing the local man from a distance and alleging that he was brandishing a stone in a threatening manner. However, the footage was unclear, and it was uncertain whether the local man was indeed holding a stone.
The incident concluded with the tourist being taken away by ambulance, suggesting he sustained injuries during the confrontation. Observers have noted that, while tensions arose, physical violence should never be the solution, especially as tourists come to Hong Kong to experience its unique culture—often resorting to sleeping rough due to high accommodation costs.
