The late David Lynch is practically synonymous with coffee. From the abundance of brews in his seminal work, Twin Peaks, to having created his own line of coffee, the director was quite the aficionado.
When we saw that an auction was being held to sell his estate, we were pleased to find that some of his beloved gear, including some of the best coffee makers, was listed. It’s a mix of accessible basics as well as professional-grade appliances.
His coffee maker of choice? Mr. Coffee: a drip coffee maker with a highly affordable retail price tag ($19.99 to be exact). While the one listed in the auction comes in white, a similar model is available at Walmart in black, and promises ‘easy pouring and handling.’
While his higher-end appliances include a La Marzocco espresso machine going for $10,000, and a Mazzer Mini Electronic espresso grinder for $4,500, we asked our kitchen editor for insight into some comparable picks.
‘The Baratza Encore Coffee Grinder is a barista favorite for good reason; it has the most precision of all the coffee grinders I have ever tested,’ says Lydia Hayman, Homes & Gardens’ kitchen editor. ‘It’s durable, hard-working, and has forty different grind settings for any style of coffee, which is great for coffee geeks.’
When it comes to the espresso machine, Lydia proposes an Italian contemporary of the La Marzocco one, at a fraction of the auction cost.
‘If you are looking for a luxurious Italian coffee maker with professional credentials, La Pavoni is a name to know about,’ she says. ‘This espresso machine is incredibly technical; I recommend it to those who want a specialty coffee experience, but it will be too complicated for beginners and casual coffee drinkers.’
