Famously originally published as Twilight fan fiction, the Fifty Shades books and then the movies were never regarded as high art. They are, however, plenty entertaining and serve a unique niche within erotic dramas, as there still arenāt many focusing on BDSM (although the recently released Pillion is a great example of a far better one). Now over 10 years since the first film was released, the entire trilogy starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan is available in an ultra-high-definition set with the release of the Fifty Shades: 3-Movie Collection 4K.
āAna (Dakota Johnson) is an inexperienced college student tasked with interviewing enigmatic billionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan). But what starts as business quickly becomes an unconventional romance. Ana soon finds another side to Christian as she discovers his secrets and explores her own dark desires. What results is a thrilling romance as Christian and Ana test the limits of their relationship,ā says the official description.
None of the three films was a critical darling, and for good reason, as the trilogy has uneven pacing and both Johnson and Dornan were still developing as performers. However, all three films have a solid score from Danny Elfman and deliver on the erotic premise, as thereās plenty of sex thatās far from the norm that we see in most movies. If you donāt mind some melodrama and can give in to its ridiculous nature, the films are a fun watch to revisit.
As for the technical performance, all three Fifty Shades films look and sound great. If you want to see attractive people get it on, then surely you want to see it in the best detail possible, right? For all their flaws, the films are well shot, and they look pretty great with HDR, as the black levels look great. Featuring a DTS:X master audio track, you can also fully enjoy Elfmanās score as everything sounds immersive.
As far as bonus features go, all three films feature unrated cuts that are slightly longer. Thereās also a wide range of featurettes for each film, plus a few deleted scenes. Thereās also a 30-minute film taking a look at Freedās key scenes, and overall, there are a few hours of bonus features to enjoy.
Fifty Shades: 3-Movie Collection 4K Review: Final Verdict
While the Fifty Shades: 3-Movie Collection 4K wonāt convert any doubters of the franchise into fans, it is an affordable way to own the trilogy in its best form. Looking and sounding fantastic, these films have gotten a wonderful transfer. If youāre looking to revisit the Dakota Johnson BDSM movies, then you canāt go wrong with this set.
