Covid-19 in Hong Kong: guide to the resurgence in cases and how to stay safe

Hong Kong health authorities have recorded 30 Covid-19-related deaths among 81 severe adult cases in the past four weeks, with the proportion of positive respiratory samples in the same period reaching this year’s peak.

But experts have said the overall impact of the virus is weaker than in the past, while there is no evidence suggesting the prevalent strain will lead to more severe disease.

The Post unpacks the current Covid-19 situation in the city and what residents can do to protect themselves.

1. What is the status of Covid-19 in Hong Kong?

According to the Centre for Health Protection (CHP)’s latest data ending May 10, the percentage of respiratory samples testing positive for Covid-19 had increased to 13.66 per cent from 6.21 per cent in the week of April 6 to 12, a new high in the past year.

In the past four weeks, health authorities also logged a total of 81 severe Covid-19 cases involving adults, including 30 deaths.

The per capita viral load of Covid-19 tested in sewage water was around 710,000 copies per litre, jumping from 390,000 copies per litre four weeks ago.

The consultation rate of Covid-19 cases at accident and emergency departments, general outpatient clinics and private clinics also saw a significant rise.
