Dozens of construction workers have staged a protest near the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, demanding a subsidiary of a city-based conglomerate pay their outstanding wages.
They gathered on Thursday morning at the construction site of a smart car parking space on the Hong Kong side of the bridge and held banners calling Jardine Engineering Corporation an “unscrupulous boss”.
About 100 workers have claimed they are owed three to four months’ wages of HK$7.6 million (US$978,000), despite their negotiations with the subsidiary of Jardine Matheson and efforts to seek help from the Labour Department.

Jardine Matheson told the Post that the project was a joint venture between Paul Y Engineering Group, China International Marine Containers and Jardine Engineering Corporation.
The Post has contacted the Labour Department and the companies for comment.
Last month, Paul Y, one of Hong Kong’s largest construction firms, applied for a court to appoint provisional liquidators for five of its subsidiaries amid debt issues, as well as formulate a restructuring plan.
