China’s next decade to cement status as hi-tech manufacturing powerhouse: reports

China is expected to solidify its position as a hi-tech manufacturing powerhouse over the next decade as it edges closer to “innovation and excellence” alongside the United States, Germany and Japan, according to new reports issued by Chinese institutions.

The documents, published on Tuesday, stated that China had achieved its “strategic goal” of becoming the world’s fourth-most-advanced “manufacturing power” in 2024, adding that the sector would play a central role in “real” economic development over the coming decade.

The assessment was based on the manufacturing power index, developed by the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the China Academy of Machinery Science and Technology and the China Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team. The index has evaluated the country’s manufacturing performance since 2015.

Also released on Tuesday was the “Green Paper on Technological Innovation in Key Sectors of China’s Manufacturing Industry”, which reviewed progress in 2025 and offered forecasts across 17 strategic sectors including next-generation information technology, high-end and automated manufacturing systems, robotics and aerospace equipment.
As Beijing targets becoming the world’s “leading manufacturing power” by 2035, the report’s authors said China would focus on improving quality, enhancing efficiency, and transforming and upgrading industry “by adhering to innovation as the fundamental driving force along with the development of artificial intelligence”.

“It is expected that by 2030, seven industries – information and communication equipment, advanced rail transport equipment, ship and marine engineering equipment, power equipment, new energy and intelligent connected vehicles, textiles and home appliances – will maintain their world-leading positions and achieve breakthroughs through original innovation.”
