Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said he held bilateral talks with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Munich on February 13, focusing on trade relations, diplomatic contacts, and China’s potential role in efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
“In Munich, I had a meaningful and productive meeting with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi,” Sybiha wrote in a post on X.

He said the discussions centered on “ways to develop mutually beneficial trade and bilateral ties based on reciprocal respect for territorial integrity,” while reiterating Ukraine’s interest in high-level engagement with Beijing.

Sybiha also said the two sides addressed peace initiatives and “China’s important role in facilitating an end to the war.” He noted that he briefed Wang on the battlefield situation, ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, and “the damage to Chinese companies from Russian strikes.”

The minister welcomed China’s decision to provide further support to Ukraine’s energy sector. “I am grateful for Beijing’s decision to provide an additional humanitarian energy assistance package to Ukraine,” he said, adding that he invited Wang to visit Ukraine and thanked him for an invitation to visit China.
The aid comes at a critical moment. Russia has escalated its bombardment of the Ukrainian energy system, causing widespread blackouts as temperatures drop below freezing.
The scale of the recent attacks has been unprecedented. During a single night, Russian forces launched 562 aerial weapons—including ballistic and cruise missiles and hundreds of drones—at Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Ukrainian intelligence estimates the cost of that one barrage at approximately $324.8 million.
The situation is particularly dire in the eastern city of Kharkiv, which recently endured a sustained three-hour bombardment targeting its power grid. With local temperatures well below zero, the strikes have left thousands of residents without heating or electricity, forcing emergency crews to work in freezing conditions to prevent the system from collapsing entirely.
Previously, Chinese President Xi Jinping held separate discussions with US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Trump, in his conversation with Xi, reaffirmed the “exceptionally good” relations between the US and China, emphasizing that they had discussed a range of critical issues.
Among the discussed topics were trade, the situation in Taiwan, Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, and Iran. Trump also revealed his plans to visit China in the near future.
