Champions League: Atletico Madrid vs. Arsenal Odds, Picks & Predictions

We’ve reached the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League and it brings a clash between sides from the English Premier League and the Spanish La Liga. Arsenal makes the trip to face Atlético Madrid in the first leg of the two-leg series at Riyadh Air Metropolitano in Madrid Wednesday night. We have you covered with our best Arsenal vs. Atlético Madrid best bets.

Arsenal comes in off a 1-0 home victory over Newcastle in Premier League action Saturday in their previous contest. Atlético Madrid earned a 3-2 home win over Athletic Club in their last match Saturday.

This marks the first time that the two sides have met in Champions League play. Let’s take a look and give you our top Arsenal vs. Atlético Madrid betting tips.

Arsenal snapped a four-match skid in domestic play as they managed to get by Newcastle at home Saturday. The Gunners improved their record to 22 wins, seven draws and five losses in Premier League play. They own a three-point edge over Manchester City, though Man City has a match in hand. Against Newcastle, Eberechi Eze’s marker in the ninth minute of play was the only goal for Arsenal. That one stood up as the winner as the Gunners stymied Newcastle’s attack. The win pushed the Gunners back atop the Premier League standings, at least for the moment.

In the Champions League quarterfinals, Arsenal got by Sporting CP by a 1-0 aggregate thanks to a Kai Havertz goal in stoppage time. That goal came in the opening leg of the tie. The second leg was a scoreless draw. Arsenal owned a 15-8 advantage in shot attempts in that contest but had just one shot on target. Both teams hit posts but neither was able to score. As a result, Arsenal advanced to the semifinals.

Atlético Madrid Looking for Home Success

Atlético Madrid had dropped their last five matches in domestic competition before getting in the win column against Athletic Club. That win ran Atleti’s record to 18 wins, six draws and nine losses in La Liga action. They are fourth in the table, five points behind third-place Villarreal. Against Athletic Club, Atlético Madrid trailed 1-0 at the half. Antoine Griezmann knotted the match in the 49th minute of play. Alexander Sørloth made it 2-1 Atleti in the 54th minute and extended to a 3-1 advantage in the third minute of stoppage time. Athletic Club got one back in the seventh minute of stoppage time but Atleti held on for the win.

In their Champions League quarterfinal tie, Atlético Madrid took the first leg by a 2-0 margin. Julián Álvarez opened the scoring in the 45th minute of play. Sørloth tallied in the 70th minute to make it a 2-0 margin. In the second leg, Atlético Madrid gave up a pair of quick goals to knot the aggregate. Ademola Lookman scored in the 31st minute for Atleti to make it a 2-1 game. That gave Atlético Madrid the edge on aggregate. Neither side scored the rest of the match so while Atleti dropped the leg 2-1, they won the tie by a 3-2 aggregate total.

Arsenal vs. Atlético Madrid Prediction

Neither side has been in their best form of late, having snapped recent slides in their previous matches. Arsenal had dropped four straight matches and blew a nine-point edge atop the Premier League standings. With that said, Arsenal has allowed goals in just four of their 12 matches in Champions League play. Meanwhile, Atlético Madrid has never lost at home in six Champions League matches against English squads. As this is the first leg of the tie, nothing will be decided here. With the Gunners stingy defensively and Atlético Madrid stellar at home, I’m leaning toward a draw in his contest.

Our Prediction: Match to End in a Draw (+220, DraftKings)
