Customers at some Buc-ee’s locations are noticing a change when it comes to buying fuel – and the policy is already drawing mixed reactions online.
Signs posted at certain Buc-ee’s pumps indicate that customers using a credit or debit card must pay at the pump, while those paying with cash can still prepay inside the store before fueling. The change has surprised some drivers who are used to paying for fuel inside the store along with drinks, snacks or other purchases.

Buc-ee’s did not respond to a request for comment before publication.
Even without an official explanation, the policy has quickly become a topic of discussion on social media, where customers are sharing their reactions and speculating about the reasoning behind the shift.
In the Facebook group Houston Historic Retail, several users shared their thoughts on the change.
“Honestly the reason some go inside to pay with a card is the fear of card skimmers at the pump,” wrote Martin Phan in the group. “Also what if you are already buying other items inside and want to get gas?”
Others suggested the rule may be designed to keep traffic moving around the fuel pumps.
“They probably don’t want people taking so long at the pumps,” wrote Bonnie Bleyl Martinez. “They want you to move it on out. They still take cash inside because some people don’t have cards.”
Another commenter, David Lantz, said the change could help reduce delays for drivers waiting to fill up.

“That’s a good idea, considering how long the inside lines are with people buying food, not to mention the delay outside in finding an available pump because people have gone inside to pay,” Lantz wrote.
The policy has sparked broader discussion online as customers debate whether the change is a practical move to improve traffic flow or an inconvenience for those used to paying for gas alongside their in-store purchases.
The discussion has spread across other social media posts as well, with reactions ranging from frustration to outright mockery of the backlash.
“I have not seen this much crying in a long time,” wrote Facebook user Shon Yarborough. “Buc-ee’s is requiring you to pay at the pump to get gas if you are using a credit card… quit crying and acting like it’s the end of the world.”
Others said they were simply confused by the change after encountering the policy for the first time.
“Since when can you only pay at the pump with a card for Buc-ee’s?” wrote Jaquia Griffin in a Facebook post. “I usually do but today I wanted coffee and tried to pay inside but couldn’t. I wanna know the reason.”
Some longtime customers said the rule could change how often they stop at the travel center.
“Well BUCEES has lost my business… been going to them for years,” wrote Facebook user Kenja Vargas. “They told me I can ONLY pre pay inside with cash… cards have to be used at the pump.”
Vargas added that the policy could mean using a card twice during a visit – once inside and again at the pump – which they said was inconvenient.
Other commenters said they were concerned about temporary bank holds sometimes placed on debit or credit cards during fuel purchases.
One Facebook user, posting under the name LavenderSloth4342, also shared an image of a notice allegedly posted on some pumps warning customers that banks may place a hold on card funds for several days after a transaction. However, that notice could not be independently verified.
For now, the policy continues to generate discussion online as customers debate whether the change improves efficiency at the pump, or simply adds another step to the Buc-ee’s pit stop experience.
