The first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day was released earlier this week, and with it came answers to a mystery fans have held onto since 2021. Tom Holland is now opening up about what makes this next chapter in Peter Parker’s story unlike anything audiences have seen before.
Tom Holland on how Spider-Man: Brand New Day is different
Tom Holland describes Spider-Man: Brand New Day as “a fresh start” for the character. The actor explained that what Peter Parker is experiencing post-No Way Home is “really profound and unique to the superhero genre.”
The film is a major shift in direction. After Jon Watts reimagined Spider-Man for the MCU by avoiding familiar territory like no Uncle Ben origin, grander Avengers-connected adventures, it seems filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton is taking the hero back to his roots. This time, it’s a street-level story set in Manhattan with a lineup of comic book villains.
One of the biggest differences that sets apart Spider-Man: Brand New Day is, as Tom Holland described it, involves the leads “finding their identity and becoming adults.” For Peter Parker, that journey is about “evolving” and “learning to really like find an identity.”
Further adding, “I think my favourite thing about Peter Parker is that he is always selfless,” Holland quipped. “Everything that he does is for other people, and particularly in this movie, he is making the ultimate sacrifice to try and protect Ned and MJ. And that is having a really catastrophic effect on not only his personal life, but also his health.”
It could mean the conversation around mental health and its effects on physicality as well. Holland summed it up, “I think that is something that we’ve never dealt with in a Spider-Man movie before. And I think that it’s just a really cool thing for us to explore.”
So, with Jacob Batalon and Zendaya confirmed to return, questions remain about whether Ned and MJ will ever regain their memories of Peter. Based on the rules of Doctor Strange’s spell, that seems unlikely, forcing Peter to live with his sacrifice.
Fans will get their answer on July 31, 2026.
