Best Japanese Coffee Shops To Visit In Hong Kong

These Japanese Coffee Shops In Hong Kong Are A Perfect Mix Of Aesthetics And Taste

Hong Kong — along with many other Asian cities — has fully embraced the café craze, with new spots popping up every month. But not every coffee bar may be your cup of Joe. Whether you seek a moment of calm or a flawless pour-over, we’ve found the best spots to savour the artistry of Japanese coffee shops in Hong Kong.

Coffee has woven itself into the fabric of everyday Japanese culture, with cities like Kyoto, Tokyo, and Osaka brimming with baristas dedicated to perfecting their craft. Beyond the minimalist aesthetics, every detail in a Japanese coffee shop serves a purpose. The vintage brewing equipment and Japanese-style ceramics lend a retro charm (some cafes also have tatami seating and old-school decor). There’s even a certain ritual to enjoying your coffee: slow, mindful sips, and a respect for undisturbed silence. And when it comes to the menu, expect Hojicha lattes, airy sponge cakes, and, of course, sublime matcha.

Japanese-inspired cafes are a local favourite

Japanese coffee shops offer more than just a drink — they’re an experience. Most have transparent glass windows letting in plenty of natural light, creating a serene atmosphere where time slows down. And with no distracting pop music in the background, these cafes are optimal for those seeking an alternate space to work from. Also, the staff here are meticulous when it comes to preparing their drinks, ensuring excellence in every cup. It’s no wonder these tranquil havens have gained such popularity in Hong Kong.

From tucked-away spots in Sheung Wan to minimalist hideouts in Tai Hang, these cafes blend Japanese precision with local sensibility. Some even collaborate with Hong Kong-based roasters for exclusive brews. And if you time your visit right, you might catch a Japanese-style dessert pop-up or seasonal matcha special.

So, if you’re seeking a cosy nook with warm and inviting vibes, redirect your cafe-hopping adventures to these Japanese-style coffee shops in Hong Kong.

Noda Coffee

Noda welcomes guests with its light wooden exterior and traditional sliding door, revealing a spacious interior adorned with paper lanterns. Shelves display carefully selected coffee beans and artisan ceramics for purchase. The menu features classic offerings alongside signature creations like the Matcha Espresso Latte, Matcha Suntory Tonic, and the Stress Releaser (a decaf option). If you’re feeling peckish, grab a fluffy Swiss roll and a filling pastry. What truly sets Noda apart is its specialisation in green coffee beans — each batch handpicked and sourced from Japan’s finest growing regions.

YAMA

Translating to “mountain” in Japanese, YAMA stays true to its theme of snow-capped mountains, skiing and snowboarding. The exterior of this coffee shop resembles a cosy ski hut (with a snowboard bench outside for those with pets). As you enter, you’ll see a flight of stairs going up. The second-storey houses Japanese lifestyle products and a couple seating (though not the most comfortable). As for drinks, YAMA’s unique for its Honeycomb Blackccino and the PB Caffe Latte (yes, PB as in Peanut Butter!).

Milligram Coffee

Milligram Coffee

Retro turquoise ceramics, warm wooden stools, delicate potted trees, and softly glowing lamps create the perfect zen atmosphere at Milligram Coffee. You might initially mistake their signature red noren curtains for a sushi spot, but this Wellington Street hideaway is a true coffee sanctuary. Their baristas approach pour-over coffee with ritual-like precision, while their lattes are adorned with exquisite, Instagram-worthy art. Don’t miss their perfectly caramelised canalé, or for heartier appetites, the satisfying bento boxes or umami-rich Miso Carbonara.

Kachimushi HK

Nestled in the countryside of Kam Tin and Sai Kung, Kachimushi embodies Japanese cafe culture at its finest. While most Japanese coffee shops let their brews take centre stage, here the culinary creations – from airy Dutch Baby Pancakes to artful open toasts and perfectly caramelised Basque burnt cheesecakes – truly steal the show. The space masterfully blends rustic charm with authentic Japanese details, complete with tatami flooring for traditional floor seating (a rarity in Hong Kong!). Pet owners will appreciate the outdoor bench seating, making this one of the city’s most unique pet-friendly café experiences.

Kaffe Jen offers intimate tatami floor seating (perfect for two), surrounded by warm wooden decor (even the menu is wooden!), Studio Ghibli figurines, Japanese magazines, and soft ambient lighting.

The menu features homemade cakes, weekend breakfast specials, and an impressive drink selection. Adventurous coffee lovers should try unique offerings like the Ginger Honey Coffee, Tiramisu Latte, or striking Bamboo Charcoal Coffee. hara kako

Taking up two floors at Hollywood Centre, hara kako is a lesser-known gem that’s easy to overlook. The ground floor is perfect for those with pets. You can pick the java of your choice and people-watch as you unwind. Upstairs, the vibes are slightly different. There’s a long table that works well to type away at your laptop or read. And on the other side of the cafe, you’ll find lounge chairs and sofas where it’s so easy to sink in and catch-up with friends. Though on the pricier side, we recommend the hand-pours, the three on the menu each come with a distinct taste.

Inside, the space is a nostalgic treasure trove — think vintage telephones, old-school radios, retro posters, and an array of charming knickknacks.

Honestly, it’s hard to decide what’s more delightful: the whimsical ambiance or the beautifully presented food. Don’t miss their signature vintage chiffon cakes, and for drinks, choose from a selection of coffee, tea, or refreshing cold beverages.

sap.sann

With its minimalist boxy wooden facade, sap.sann stands out among Sham Shui Po’s many hip cafes. The intimate space has limited seating — just traditional Japanese-style floor cushions and low wooden tables on raised platforms — so dress for comfort, especially on busy weekends and afternoons when it gets crowded.

The beautifully illustrated menu makes choosing a delight. Must-tries include their Chestnut Mont Blanc, yoghurt mousse cakes, and signature toast. While their coffee is excellent, don’t overlook the creative non-coffee drinks, from a nutty Genmaicha Latte to comforting Brown Sugar Soymilk and vibrant fruit teas.

Tucked along the stairway on Shin Hing Street (just steps from the famed COA bar), E N exudes an unpretentious, neighbourhood charm—though weekends bring a livelier (and louder) crowd.

Beyond their exceptional single-origin espresso, cold brews, and hand drips, you’ll also find a list of coffee-based cocktails. Pick your poison from the Espresso Martini, Cold Brew G&T, or the unique Coffee Sour that blends together whisky, espresso, lemon, syrup.
