Searchlight Pictures has released the trailer for The Roses, the upcoming black comedy starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman.

What happens in The Roses trailer?

In The Roses trailer, Theo (Cumberbatch) and Ivy (Colman) seemingly have the perfect marriage. However, behind closed doors, their relationship is falling apart. Jealousy and rage lead to a battle of one-upmanship, as Theo and Ivy try to get the better of one another. “Things are getting a little out of hand,” Theo tells Ivy before she shoots down the chandelier with a gun.

“Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids,” the official synopsis reads. “But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites.”

The Roses also stars Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Belinda Bromilow, Sunita Mani, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, and Kate McKinnon.

Jay Roach directs The Roses from a screenplay by Academy Award nominee Tony McNamara. Producers include Roach, Michelle Graham, Adam Ackland, Leah Clarke, Ed Sinclair, and Tom Carver.

The Roses is a reimagining of the 1989 film The War of the Roses, based on the novel by Warren Adler. Directed by Danny DeVito, The War of the Roses starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner as the married couple at the center of the conflict. DeVito’s movie received three Golden Globe nominations and grossed $160 million worldwide on a $26 million budget.

Searchlight Pictures will release The Roses in theaters on August 29, 2025.
