Bill Dubuque addressed one of the most pressing questions surrounding Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal’s action-thriller franchise during a recent interview. The writer of the first two films offered fans a hopeful signal about what lies ahead for the series, hinting that the wait for the next chapter may not be as long as the last.
The Accountant 3 gets promising update
Bill Dubuque, writer of the first two films and co-creator of Netflix’s Ozark, has signalled that The Accountant 3 is likely to move forward soon. Speaking to ScreenRant during an interview for his new series M.I.A., Dubuque shared an encouraging update on the franchise’s future.
The writer indicated that Amazon MGM appears interested in greenlighting a third installment. Dubuque stated, “I believe Amazon definitely wants one,” pointing to the sequel’s commercial performance as a key factor driving the studio’s interest.
Dubuque hinted that fans should expect to see the next chapter on the big screen. He stated, “Without revealing too much, do not be surprised when you see it at your local theater. I appreciate that. You are my cup of tea. Let’s give some more time, so he can say nice things about something else I’ve written.”
The Accountant 2 hit theatres on April 25, 2025, through Amazon MGM and Warner Bros. after lingering in development hell for years. Director Gavin O’Connor and Ben Affleck convinced Warner Bros. to hand over the rights so the sequel could finally happen. The follow-up reunited Affleck with Jon Bernthal, J.K. Simmons and Cynthia Addai-Robinson.
The sequel earned $103.3 million against an $80 million production budget. Critics responded warmly, with the film landing a 75% “Certified Fresh” approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes compared to the original’s 53% score.
O’Connor previously told ScreenRant at the sequel’s 2025 SXSW premiere that the third film would not take as long to develop. He has expressed viewing the franchise as a trilogy at minimum. O’Connor also indicated interest in making the third film a buddy road trip story featuring the return of Anna Kendrick’s Dana.
