German U-21 national team coach Antonio Di Salvo announced that Bayern Munich midfielder (though, he does not often play that position these days) Tom Bischof will captain the squad.
“Tom will be our captain. He has done an outstanding job. I felt in our discussions that he was really keen to play these matches, and that he wanted to lead by example. He will also play in midfield and not out wide,” Germany U-21 coach Antonio Di Salvo (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Bischof is in a weird spot — he is one of Germany’s best midfielders, but did not earn a call to the senior team because he rarely plays the position for Bayern Munich. On mostly any other team in the Bundesliga (including if he had stayed at Hoffenheim), Bischof likely would be starting and have earned a position under Julian Nagelsmann. The 20-year-old was already tracking in that direction, but Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has mostly used Bischof out of position as an outside-back where he is not as good.
Bischof was last called to Germany’s first team last May.
