Following a hard-fought draw away to Newcastle in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16, Barcelona return to La Liga action as the Blaugrana welcome Sevilla to the Greatest Stadium on Earth on Sunday afternoon.

Barça come into this one looking for a fourth consecutive win in the league to restore their four-point advantage at the top of the table after Real Madrid’s win on Saturday. The Catalans will be favorites at home where they’ve won every single game since returning to Camp Nou in all competitions, but there are multiple reasons why a victory is anything but a guarantee on Sunday.

First, Barça are in the middle of a very tight and undecided European tie with a visibly tired squad and Hansi Flick is expected to make changes, and the league games in between Champions League knockout matches are always tricky because of the rotations alone. So expecting a great performance in this circumstances is not realistic, and Barça will have to find a way to grind out a result.

Second, Sevilla are the authors of Barça’s worst league loss of the season, a 4-1 destruction in Seville back in October in which the Blaugrana were overwhelmed in every single aspect of the game and should have conceded anywhere between six and nine goals that afternoon. It was legitimately that bad, and Sevilla will arrive at Camp Nou with confidence that they have the formula to exploit Barça’s high line and shock the Catalans again.

Sevilla haven’t exactly set the world on fire since that win, and are not quite out of the woods yet when it comes to the relegation race. If you’re a glass half-full kind of person, Sevilla have lost just one of their last eight; if you don’t usually look at the bright side of life, Sevilla have won just two of their last twelve. There have been a whole lot of draws, but they’ve been pretty competitive in pretty much every game and are talented enough to provide a really tough challenge at Camp Nou.

Barça’s home will welcome 62,000 fans for the first time since the return, and the atmosphere will be significantly better. That entire empty area behind one of the goals will be filled with fans and a new, dedicated supporters section will be unveiled on Sunday as well. There will be good energy at the stadium to help push the team to try and play as well as they can, but the three points are truly all that matter.

The international break is one week away, a chance to rest and reset before the stretch run really begins. But there are three games before that, all of them must-win, and Barça have to find a way to win all three. Even if it’s not easy or pretty.

Barcelona (4-2-3-1): Joan; Espart, Cubarsí, Martín, Cancelo; Eric, Casadó; Yamal, Fermín, Rashford; Ferran

Sevilla (4-4-2): Vlachodimos; Cardoso, Nianzou, Gudelj, Mendy; Sánchez, Agoumé, Sow, Oso; Adams, Alexis

Don’t expect a great show. This team is tired and the starting lineup will be different than usual, and Sevilla know they can cause Barça problems. So this will be tight and won in the margins, but I’m still trusting the home team to find a way to win: 2-1 Barça.
