AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am: Field, format, celebrities, schedule as Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy make PGA Tour returns | Golf News

Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler make their first PGA Tour appearances of the year as part of a star-studded field at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, live from Thursday on Sky Sports.

Scheffler claimed nine worldwide victories during a dominant 2024, winning seven times on the PGA Tour and securing Olympic gold for Team USA before rounding off the year by securing the Hero World Challenge title in the Bahamas.

The world No 1 suffered a puncture wound on his right hand while helping to prepare Christmas Day dinner, with Scheffler undergoing surgery and then sitting out of his first two planned starts of the season – The Sentry and The American Express.

Scheffler is ready to return and begin a busy schedule, with the American set to play the WM Phoenix Open and the Genesis Invitational in the coming weeks ahead of title defences next month at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players.

McIlroy has only played twice before at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, missing the cut in 2018 and struggling to a share of 66th in last year’s weather-affected tournament, but will hope for better in his first PGA Tour appearance since August’s Tour Championship.

The Northern Irishman has top-four finishes in five of his last six worldwide starts, including a win at the DP World Tour Championship, with McIlroy coming in off the back of claiming a share of fourth in his Hero Dubai Desert Classic title defence earlier this month.

Who else is playing at Pebble Beach?

World No 2 Xander Schauffele is not involved, having battled a rib injury since the end of last year and skipped the last two PGA Tour events, although eight of the world’s top 10 are expected to feature.

Jordan Spieth is making a return at Pebble Beach, a first start for the three-time major champion and former world No 1 since surgery on his left wrist after the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Augusta.

Defending champion Wyndham Clark, Hideki Matsuyama – who broke scoring records with his win at The Sentry earlier this month – and Collin Morikawa are all involved, while England’s Tommy Fleetwood also makes his first PGA Tour start of the year.

How is AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am different?

The tournament’s elevation to a Signature Event means a reduced field for the second successive year, with just 80 players in action and amateurs only included for the first two days.

Amateurs feature in 80 two-person teams for the first two rounds with the professional event having no cut and the winner getting a $3.6m share of a $20m prize purse.

Monterey Peninsula Golf Club is no longer in the tournament rotation, with Spyglass Hill being used for the first two rounds and Pebble Beach Golf Links used for all four tournament days.

Which celebrities are involved?

The pro-am teams will be confirmed during the week of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, with tournament organisers yet to announce which celebrities will tee it up in the 2025 edition.

Hollywood A-listers, chart-topping musicians and sporting icons have been among those to previously appear as amateur partners, with Justin Timberlake, Mark Wahlberg and Bill Murray all former participants at the event.

Actor Alfonso Ribeiro celebrated with the ‘Carlton Dance’ after draining a $500,000 putt on the final hole to win the Every Shot Counts Charity Challenge, a charity event ahead of the 2021 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Gareth Bale made his Pebble Beach debut in the 2023 edition, while NFL legend Tom Brady and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen both participated in last year’s weather-affected tournament.

What happened in last year’s tournament?

Clark was declared the winner in 2024 after extensive wind and rain forced the PGA Tour to cancel the final day of play and make the event a 54-hole tournament.

Clark was six shots behind after the first two days but posted a course-record 12-under-par 60 on Saturday to move to 17 under, one ahead of Sweden’s Ludvig Åberg.

Strong wind and rain had postponed the final round to Monday, but a statement from the PGA Tour late on Sunday said after consulting the Monterey County emergency authorities and out of an “abundance of caution” for spectators and players, there would be no further play.

Who has also previously impressed?

Spieth won this event in 2017 and finished runner-up to Tom Hoge in the 2022 contest, while Justin Rose came through a Monday finish to secure his most recent PGA Tour title in the 2023 edition.

Mark O’Meara and Phil Mickelson both have five career victories at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, with Daniel Berger and Nick Taylor among the other players to have won the event in recent years.

What happens if there is a play-off?

The tournament has not required a play-off since 2008, the only one this century, where Steve Lowery defeated VIjay Singh to give him his last of three career PGA Tour titles.

Should sudden death be required to decide the winner this year, the players involved would start at the 18th and then – if required – play the same par-five again. The par-three 17th and 18 would then be played until a winner was found.

How can I watch live on Sky Sports?

Sky Sports will show all four rounds of the latest PGA Tour Signature Event, with early coverage live from 4.45pm on Thursday ahead of full coverage from 8pm.

Coverage begins at the earlier time of 4.30pm on Saturday and 4pm for Sunday’s round, which is scheduled to be finished by 11.30pm. Get Sky Sports or stream with no contract on NOW.
