Following a huge derby win over Espanyol to take a big step towards winning La Liga, Barcelona travel to the Spanish capital for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie against Atlético Madrid at the Estadio Metropolitano on Tuesday night.

Barça come into this one looking to overturn a two-goal deficit from the first leg, which went as badly as it possibly could for the Blaugrana but didn’t knock them out completely. A two-goal deficit is definitely not the end of the world and Barça have 90 minutes to win by two goals, take this to extra-time and maybe penalties and find a way to escape Madrid with a spot in the semi-finals.

This is definitely doable on paper, but making this happen in real life is another beast entirely. Barça will attempt to overturn a two-goal deficit against Diego Simeone, an absolute master in defending first leg leads. El Cholo has been in this situation a million times before, and perhaps no coach is willing to go to the same depths he is just to make sure his team goes through. Whatever it takes.

Atlético will likely be very defensive and try to take advantage of Barça’s high line to score the one or two goals they need to kill the tie off, but they could also try and catch Barça off guard and launch a blitz in the first 15 minutes designed to force mistakes with suffocating pressing to score early and then focus solely on defending their lead. Whatever the best gameplan is, Simeone will have it, and his players will follow it blindly.

The Colchoneros will also have the crowd on their side, and the Metropolitano is at its very best on European nights. Atlético fans will be extra hostile, will put a ton of pressure on the referee, and Simeone will gesture to the crowd dozens of times asking for more support. It will be a true pressure cooker, and it will stretch Barça’s mental toughness to its limit.

Barça have to go into a cauldron needing to win by at least two goals in regulation, they have to do it without their spiritual leader and Champions League big game expert in Raphinha, and the state of the pitch is a cause for huge concern. Simply put, the odds are terrible. Every rational person looking at this game will favor Atlético for a variety of real reasons, and Barça fans are going into this fully prepared for heartbreak.

So it’s up to Hansi Flick and the players on the pitch to show up, answer every question, discover their best version, and find a way. This comeback isn’t mission impossible, but it’s almost that. It’ll take a monumental effort, both physically and mentally, and the best players must play their best stuff when it matters most. There won’t be a league game this weekend, so there will be more than enough time to rest after this one. There is zero excuse for not giving it your all.

Barça haven’t had a truly special night in a Champions League knockout match in a long, long time, but they can make this one very, very special.

Let’s dance.

POSSIBLE LINEUPS

Barcelona (4-2-3-1): Joan; Kounde, Eric, Martín, Cancelo; De Jong, Pedri; Yamal, Olmo, Rashford; Lewandowski

Atlético (4-4-2): Musso; Molina, Le Normand, Lenglet, Ruggeri; Simeone, Llorente, Koke, Lookman; Griezmann, Alvarez

PREDICTION

Diego Simeone is a master of defending a first leg lead, Barça don’t have Raphinha and the Metropolitano will be incredibly hostile. Everything says this won’t happen for the Blaugrana, but you know what? I still believe in Hansi Flick and this team’s fighting spirit: Barça on penalties. I have no idea how we’ll get there, but get ready for some crazy business.
