Apple releases iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 adoption numbers for the first time

76% of iPhones introduced in the last four years are already running iOS 18, according to new data published by Apple today. 19% of them are on iOS 17 still, and only 5% on earlier versions. Of all the iPhones still in use, 68% are on iOS 18, 19% on iOS 17, and 13% on earlier versions.

63% of iPads introduced in the last four years run iPadOS 18 already, compared to 27% which are on iPadOS 17 and 10% on earlier versions. Of all the iPads still in use, 53% are on iPadOS 18, 28% on iPadOS 17, and 19% on earlier versions.

Apple releases iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 adoption numbers for the first time

These numbers are as measured by devices that transacted on the App Store as of January 21. Compared to iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 around the same time last year, the numbers are very, very similar, revealing pretty much the same adoption trajectory.

Of iPhones introduced in the last four years at that time, 76% were on the latest version, and of all the iPhones ever the number was 66%. For iPads it was 61% of the ones introduced in the last four years, and 53% of all of them.

You can look at this two ways and either say iOS and iPadOS adoption speed has peaked, or you can compare these numbers to any Android device maker and laugh (if you’re an iOS fan) or cry (if you’re an Android fan). The choice is yours.
