American tourist dies after plunging from 29th floor of Hong Kong hotel, seven on ground injured

An American tourist has died after plunging from the 29th floor of a Hong Kong boutique hotel on Monday – and seven people on the ground were also injured.

The woman, only identified as a 69-year-old, fell to her death just after 9 a.m. after going to the pool deck of the Hotel Indigo Hong Kong Island, located in the bustling commercial district of Wan Chai, the South China Morning Post reported.

The tourist battled depression and had stopped taking her medication in March, a police source told the outlet. Her husband had left the hotel for a doctor’s appointment just one hour before the tragedy.

A resident, 74, was injured by the falling tourist and she was rushed to the Queen Mary Hospital where she was put in intensive care.

The impact caused glass panels in the hotel entrance to shatter, which injured six others, including the local woman’s sister, 77.

Among those wounded was a Chinese mom, 40, and her 10-year-old son; as well as another mom, 41, and her son, 8.

An 89-year-old American woman was also injured, according to the Morning Post.

Hotel Indigo Hong Kong, known for its stunning city views, received the Best Hotel Architecture in Hong Kong award at the 2013 Asia Pacific Awards ceremony.

The four-star hotel has a glass-bottomed rooftop pool and is known for its “wrapped dragon” exterior, which shimmers at night.

“The glass-bottomed, cantilevered pool on the roof top, shimmers at night and has been considered to be like the gleaming pearl often associated with the Chinese Dragon,” Aedas International board member Max Connop said.

“The concept of the wrapping dragon reaching for the pearl is incredibly strong and creates a unique addition to the sky-line of Hong Kong. Intelligent and concealed subtle lighting to the solar fins allows the dragon to literally shimmer at night.”
