Drown down the post-travel blues from the Easter long weekend with these new events in Hong Kong in May 2025. With a new month here, it’s time to welcome another set of events. We are gearing up for the summer, but before we can fully enjoy all the seasonal events, we’ll be getting a precursor this month. Check out the best things to do in Hong Kong in May 2025.

May 2025 in Hong Kong is bustling with art and cultural events. Join in the celebration of Nepali culture at the Nepal Fest or the Hong Kong International Reggae Ska Festival for a day filled with reggae, rocksteady, ska, and dub. For those who love timeless classics, there will be new productions of Mozart’s The Magic Flute and a performance of Giselle from the Hong Kong Ballet. Meanwhile, art lovers shouldn’t miss out on the Affordable Art Fair, while cinephiles can catch French films at the French May Cinema programme.

1. Nepal Fest Hong Kong 2025

Celebrate the cultural heritage of Nepal at the Nepal Fest. Enjoy live music with performances by 1974 AD, Sabin Rai & The Pharaoh, Trishna Gurung & The Collab, Swar, and more. Guests will also be able to “experience” Nepal and its culture through VR trekking, cultural stalls, workshops, and family-friendly activities. Don’t miss the showcase of Nepali culture through arts and music right here in town.

2. Cheung Chau Bun Festival

Cheung Chau’s iconic Bun Festival will surely bring visitors back to the island. The festival lasts four days, starting at the end of April, with the Piu Sik Parade scheduled for May 5. The highlight of the festival, the Bun Scrambling Final, will be on May 5 and 6. The event will have competitors race to the top of a 20-metre tower to collect as many buns as they can within three minutes. Of course, attendees not participating in the competition can still buy the iconic white buns on the island.

3. The Corner Shop Busking Festival

Head over to The Corner Shop, a street-level art space opposite Mondrian Hong Kong, for a night of music and fun. Across four Saturdays in May, music lovers will be able to enjoy performances from emerging musical talent from the city’s independent music scene. From folk to hip-hop and jazz to ballad, each of the eight artists brings with them a distinct voice and story.

4. The Magic Flute

A new production of Mozart’s popular The Magic Flute will dazzle Hongkongers this May. The two-act opera is a collaboration between Opera Hong Kong, China National Opera House, and the State Opera South Australia. Chinese director Shuang Zhou will be at the helm, together with costume designer Dan Potra. Viewers will be treated to a story that explores Eastern philosophy and urban life.

The new rendition will feature Mexican-German tenor Andrés Moreno García as Tamino while American soprano Sofia Troncoso will play Pamina. American baritone John Chest will be Papageno, and Russian soprano Aigul Khismatullina will take on the role of the Queen of the Night. Local talents Freddie Tong, Candice Chung, Ashley Chui, and Carol Lin will also be part of the production.

5. Ginsanity 2025

Calling all gin lovers! This event will be the highlight of your month. This year’s edition of Ginsanity will spotlight top gin producers from around the world. Discover more than 100 gins — simply bring your own cup or buy one for HKD 30 (THB 129.27) to sample different brands. See something you like? Order and it’ll be shipped to you fuss-free. The event is free to enter, but sampling a gin or two comes with a fee.

6. Hong Kong International Reggae Ska Festival

Hong Kong International Reggae Ska Festival will be making a comeback this year! The festival is the city’s biggest celebration of reggae, rocksteady, ska, and dub. This year, attendees can expect to see reggae legend and Trojan Recording legend, Roy Ellis, also known as Mr. Symarip. Artists from the US, UK, Thailand, and Hong Kong will also be performing.

7. French May Cinema

The 2025 edition of the French May Cinema programme will be back this month with an impressive selection of 10 French films. This year, there will be two thematic cycles. The first, “Biopic Cineart”, will focus on important figures in French culture. The second cycle, “France-Asia Bridges”, will look at the cultural exchange and ties between France and Asian countries. There will also be a special restored 4K HD screening of Maria Callas at the Paris Opera in 1958, followed by a presentation by composer Michel Reis. Finally, artist and filmmaker Chantal Stoman will present two documentaries that explore the cities of LA, USA and Ome, Japan and their connections to cinema.

8. Affordable Art Fair 2025

The Affordable Art Fair will return to the city for its 2025 edition. Grab the chance to see an exciting selection of contemporary artworks under HKD 100,000 (THB 430,890) from over 90 local and international exhibitors. Galleries from Australia, China, France, India, Japan, South Korea, Peru, South Africa, and more will be participating. This year’s theme, “I Am a Collector”, encourages visitors to discover and explore the world of art to expand their collections. But first-time buyers will also be welcomed.

9. Giselle

Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) will be staging a production of one of the most romantic ballets of all time, Giselle. Ballet artist Charla Genn, with the direction of HKB Artistic Director Septime Webre, will “wow” audiences as they bring to the stage the poignant story of love, betrayal, and redemption. The production will feature new sets and costumes from Benoir de la Danse winner Jérôme Kaplan as well as an incredible score that will leave viewers spellbound.
