Hong Kong’s monthly fireworks will kick off this May with shopping offers

Hong Kong is about to get its monthly fireworks displays and drone shows starting May, according to the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB). The launch will also come with a dedicated “one-stop website” for Golden Week offers and activities to promote shopping, dining, attractions and hotel offers to tourists.

This comes after the government set aside HKD 1.1 billion for tourism activities. The fireworks and drone shows are among the main part of Hong Kong’s promotional events. While the first pyrotechnic display will take place on May 1 at the East Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, the first drone show will add to the city’s appeal on May 11 over Victoria Harbour. Keep reading to find out more details.

Hong Kong fireworks displays and drone shows to attract visitors and locals

The inaugural monthly fireworks will be a 10-minute pyrotechnic display starting at 8 pm over the Victoria Harbour near the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade. Visitors can expect a dazzling show of pyrotechnics fired at about 130 metres from the shore and shoot up to a maximum of 100 metres.

Some visual images to look out for include the “HK” initials and a happy face brightening up the night sky. The HKTB also suggests that the best vantage point is the promenade, close to East Tsim Sha Tsui. However, due to the crowd, visitors can still visit other firework-viewing spots such as Hung Hom Promenade, East Coast Park Precinct, and Wan Chai Harbourfront area.

To make it easier for the public and visitors to plan their holidays, HKTB also launched a new website for Golden Week offers and activities. It consolidates the city’s special offers, and activities with information on traffic arrangements, opening hours of major attractions, and more. Some of the dining offers include a “Cheers Fiesta” evening offer on drinks in Tsim Sha Tsui Centre and Empire Centre, as well as discounts at Harbour Grand Kowloon.

K11 Musea will also launch a Tourist Rewards campaign where visitors can collect spending coupons for selected merchants with a total value of more than HKD 2,800. Langham Place will roll out more than 300 offers with up to 70 per cent discounts. Visit the official website to learn more about the Golden Week offers.

More upgraded attractions are in the works

The Symphony of Lights will also get a new look, launching in early 2025. Authorities hope that the makeover, which comes two decades after the attraction’s first launch, will highlight Hong Kong’s charm. HKTB will review proposals for the light show’s redesign soon. The light show got a makeover in 2017 with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra recording the new musical score.

Authorities expect over 45 million visitors to Hong Kong this year, a 35 per cent increase from 2023. In addition, there will be new decorations at the revamped Temple Street Night Market which will last until the end of the year.
