Michael Burry Warns of a Stock Market ‘Supervolcano’

Michael Burry, who bet against the 2008 housing bubble, says the next bear market may last a long time. The Michael Burry bear market warning rests on a century of inflation-adjusted S&P 500 data.

On the surface, stocks look calm. The S&P 500 closed at a record on October 6. Yet Burry argues that fewer stocks now carry the index higher.

A Quiet Record High Sits on a Hot Caldera

Burry compares the market to a supervolcano caldera. The ground looks peaceful, while pressure builds underneath.

He says the same hidden buildup sat beneath each of the 10 market tops of the past 40 years.

In his latest Substack post, he calls the October 6 high unremarkable. Volume stayed light, and similar highs in June and August 2026 led only to brief pauses.

However, his chart tracks market breadth, meaning how many stocks join a rally. That breadth keeps shrinking, echoing a similar market breadth argument from gold advocate Peter Schiff.

The Michael Burry bear market case also cites speculation, stretched valuations, and returning inflation. Earlier this month, he said investors had entered a denial stage resembling 2000 and 2008.

Michael Burry Bear Market History Points to a Long Wait

Burry leans on history, a field he says chart-trading algorithms largely ignore.

From 1966 to 1982, the inflation-adjusted S&P 500 fell about 53%. Between 1929 and 1949, the real price return reached negative 58%.

More recently, real prices dropped roughly 40% from the 2000 peak to the 2011 trough.

Dividends soften those losses. With reinvestment, the 1966 to 1982 decline shrinks to about 10%. Similarly, the 2000 to 2011 loss falls to about 25%.

Still, the Michael Burry bear market thesis centers on time, not wipeouts. Each episode forced patient holders into a wait lasting many years.

That lesson clashes with today’s “buy the dip” culture. Meanwhile, Panmure Liberum recently made Wall Street’s most bearish call, a 5,000-point S&P 500 target for 2027.

If 15 to 20 years of weak real returns lie ahead, Burry argues investors should know now. For crypto holders, the open question is whether digital assets would decouple.

Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan, for one, argued that Bitcoin thrives across economic scenarios. A Michael Burry bear market lasting a decade would put that claim to its hardest test.
