U.S. men’s national team striker Haji Wright is heading to the Premier League after Coventry City secured promotion with a dramatic 1-1 draw away at Blackburn Rovers. A late goal from Bobby Thomas in the 84th minute sealed the result the club needed, confirming a top-two finish in the Championship and ending a 25-year wait for a return to England’s top division.
Frank Lampard’s side had to do it the hard way. Blackburn took the lead and created chances to extend it, but Coventry stayed alive before Thomas struck late to send thousands of traveling fans into celebration at Ewood Park. The club had come close before, notably losing the 2023 playoff final at Wembley to Luton Town, but this time there was no heartbreak. With three games to spare, Coventry’s 86 points guarantee automatic promotion.
USMNT’s Wright central to Coventry success
Wright has been central to that success. The 28-year-old forward, who joined the club in 2023 on a four-year deal, emerged as Coventry’s leading scorer this season with 16 league goals, starting 29 matches and delivering in key moments throughout the campaign. His runs of form helped power the team’s push, including a streak of goals early in the season and another surge during a winning stretch in the spring.
For Wright, the move to the Premier League represents another step in a career that has kept him firmly in the U.S. national team picture. The California native was part of the 2022 World Cup squad and remains in contention for a place in Mauricio Pochettino’s plans for 2026, particularly with increased competition at the striker position.
Coventry’s return to the top flight also marks a major moment for Lampard, who took over in 2024 with the club near the relegation zone and has now guided them back to the Premier League. The former Chelsea star was visibly emotional at the final whistle, celebrating with players and fans as banners reading “We are back” filled the away end.
After more than two decades away, Coventry City are back among England’s elite. And with Haji Wright leading the line, they arrive with momentum, and with a U.S. striker ready to prove himself on the biggest stage.
