Lee Cronin’s The Mummy Is Best Enjoyed Knowing This Beforehand

With Lee Cronin’s The Mummy arriving in the United States this weekend, there are a few things that audiences might want to know about the horror movie before walking into the theater.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy comes from Warner Bros. Pictures. Written and directed by the titular Lee Cronin, the film stars Jack Reynor as Charlie Cannon, Laia Costa as Larissa Cannon, May Calamawy as Detective Dalia Zaki, and more.

“The young daughter of a journalist disappears into the desert without a trace—eight years later, the broken family is shocked when she is returned to them, as what should be a joyful reunion turns into a living nightmare,” the synopsis reads.

What should Lee Cronin’s The Mummy audiences know about the movie beforehand?

Blumhouse, which is one of the production companies that worked on Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, has been working overtime on Twitter to make sure everyone knows that Brendan Fraser is not in this film.

It is true that there is a new Mummy movie with Fraser that is in the works; that project, however, won’t arrive until 2028. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy not only has nothing to do with the Fraser-led franchise, but it’s also entirely different in tone — the Fraser Mummy movies thus far (again, we’ll have to wait to see what Radio Silence will do with the new film) have been action-adventure flicks that perhaps have more in common with Indiana Jones rather than anything that may keep you up at night. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, on the other hand, is a straightforward horror movie that is trying to startle and scare you. Don’t go into this one expecting to see Yetis that understand the rules of football or anything like that.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is Cronin’s third feature film after 2019’s The Hole in the Ground and 2023’s Evil Dead Rise. Similar to Evil Dead Rise, the movie relies on shock value and body horror to get a reaction out of the audience more so than it does on jump scares. Critics are mixed on how effective an approach that is, as the film currently has a 47 percent Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes with 107 reviews.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is now playing in theaters.
