A month and a half after big fight with Pentagon, Anthropic gets 'huge compliment' from Trump administration and the reason is China

After six weeks of bruising fight with the Pentagon, AI giant Anthropic PBC has received what amounts to a major endorsement from the Trump administration and the reason is China. According to a report by Bloomberg, speaking at a Wall Street Journal event in Washington, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent praised Anthropic’s new Mythos model. Bessent called Mythos as a revolutionary step that will help America maintain its lead over China in the artificial intelligence race. “This Anthropic Mythos model was a step function change in abilities, learning capabilities,” Bessent said. “It’s all logarithmic. You go from x to the 10th power to x to the 12th and then it’s very difficult to catch up.”Bessent also dismissed the suggestions that China was rapidly closing the gap, though he acknowledged the US advantage may only be three to six months.

Anthropic gets ‘huge compliment’ from Trump administration

The praise for Anthropic comes after the Pentagon earlier this year declared the AI giant as a threat to the US supply chain, invoking powers typically reserved for foreign adversaries. Anthropic also fought back in the court and won an order that blockaded the ban on government use of its technology — a move the company said could have cots billions in lost revenue.

Anthropic’s new AI model Mythos and cybersecurity concerns

Mythos, Anthropic’s latest model, is highly adept at finding vulnerabilities in software and computer systems. It is being released to a limited number of carefully chosen parties, a decision that has raised concerns about potential cyber risks. Just days before Bessent’s remarks, he and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell convened Wall Street banks to discuss those risks. At the centre of the discussion was Claude Mythos Preview—a new, unreleased AI model from Anthropic that can find and exploit software vulnerabilities better than nearly any human.Anthropic says the model has already uncovered thousands of severe, previously unknown flaws across every major operating system and web browser. One vulnerability in OpenBSD—widely regarded as one of the most secure operating systems in existence—had gone undetected for 27 years. Another, in the widely used video tool FFmpeg, sat in a line of code that automated testing tools had hit five million times without catching the problem.

Controlled Release: Project Glasswing

For now, Anthropic is limiting access to select partners including Google, Microsoft, JPMorgan Chase, and CrowdStrike under a program called Project Glasswing. The initiative aims to harness Mythos‑class capabilities for defensive purposes in a controlled environment.Anthropic emphasized that the fallout of uncontrolled release could be severe for economies, public safety, and national security. Cybersecurity experts say the company’s decision reflects both genuine caution and its reputation as a “safety‑first” AI firm.
