Leon Goretzka shrugs off role in helping Bayern Munich break all-time Bundesliga goals record with quip about 2019 own goal

Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka remained rather blasé about breaking the Bundesliga record for goals scored in a single season on Saturday night. Goretzka’s 2-0 in Saturday night’s 0-5 away win against St. Pauli officially gave Bayern 102 goals in the 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign. This enabled the German record champions to break their own record of 101 goals scored during the 1971/72 German top flight season.

A season that has already featured so many new records broken by the mighty German giants may leave those associated with the club a bit fatigued. Moreover, Goretzka – who will actually be leaving Bayern after the season concludes – surely has other things on his mind. The 31-year-old’s thoughts surely revolve around his next club, the FCB Champions League campaign, and the pressures of a projected German midfield starter during the Summer World Cup.

Honestly, I didn’t realize it,” Goretzka told Sky Germany when asked if he was aware he broke the record during the match. “After the game, a few people told me. I needed to have them explain it to me precisely which record it was.

So far, I’ve only been in the history books for the fastest own-goal ever scored [13 seconds against Augsburg on matchday 22 of the 2018/19 campaign],” Goretzka added. “It’s nice to have another entry in there.
