East Bay police search for suspect in Vallejo killing as family seeks justice for young woman

Police in Vallejo are investigating a fatal shooting at an apartment complex early Saturday morning that left a 21-year-old woman dead, as her family calls for answers and justice.

Damon Whitehead Sr. said he learned of his daughter Demonie Whitehead’s death when her friends came to his door.

“I found out through her friends. Woke me up in the morning. Was banging on the door. And said my daughter is dead,” Whitehead said.

“She was very vibrant. She was my rock. We’re like the same – headstrong. She was into music. Into crafts. She was very entrepreneurial. She was full of life,” said Whitehead.

According to Vallejo police, officers responded just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday to a 9-1-1 call at an apartment complex in the 900 block of Porter Street.

Police say when they arrived on the scene, they found Demonie suffering from at least one gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

“During the 911 call, from the person that made the call, we heard the two gunshots that took Demonie’s life,” says Bishop Leon Thomas, Jr., who was Demonie’s grandfather.

The family met Vallejo police on Monday and were played the 9-1-1 call. The family believes the shooter is Demonie’s ex-girlfriend and says they want answers.

“They do have the gun that killed her. They do know the person and have a witness statement. But they are not able to arrest (them). That is not how it goes. It has to comes from the district attorney’s office,” says Thomas.

Relatives said Demonie had launched her own clothing line and believed she had a bright future ahead.

“She was bright, funny, smart. And she is going to be missed by many and loved. We just want justice,” said her aunt, Tanya Hunter.

“We don’t have to resolve things by killing somebody,” says Bishop Thomas. “To use guns instead of words, it’s devastating. There is no coming back from death.”

The motive for the shooting is still unknown. Police say this is Vallejo’s second homicide of the year.
