Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck shuts down contract extension rumours

Speaking in the mixed zone following Germany’s 2-1 win against Ghana on Monday, Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck has denied rumours of him set to extend his contract at the club.

When asked about reports on a potential extension of his contract, the centre-back said:

“I must categorically deny that; unfortunately, we’re not there yet. I negotiated with Sebastian for a long time, but he’s no longer with us.

What has been reported is unfortunately not true. I would probably have made a decision in the coming weeks. The situation has changed a bit. I’ll be holding talks with Ole, and we’re not at the stage where we’re on the verge of a deal.

It’s a shame for BVB fans right now, but it’s not an easy situation for me either.”

Last week, both Bild and Sky Germany reported that Schlotterbeck was set to extend his contract at the club. Now, the departure of Sebastian Kehl and the arrival of Nils-Ole Book may have potentially damaged the situation.

What now for Dortmund and Schlotterbeck?

Bild now reports that the contract saga between Dortmund and the player is expected to drag on for longer. This could potentially open the door for another club to take advantage of the situation and begin negotiations with the 26-year-old over a move in the summer.
