Rachel Zegler expresses interest in doing a gender-swapped Hamlet
Rachel Zegler, whose most recent project, Snow White, did not really work out as well as one would have liked, but the young actress has big plans for stage and screen going forward.
She previously starred in West Side Story, which was an adaptation of the famous Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet. During her recent interview with The Standard, the actress was asked if she would be up for doing more Shakespeare. Zegler seemed to suggest a radical role that she would love to take on.
“If they’ll have me, I’m dying to do more Shakespeare, my God,” the Snow White star said. “I’d love to do a female Hamlet. I think that’d be so fun. Well, not ‘fun,’ really, but you know.”
This has been attempted before with a 2020 revival of Hamlet featuring Ruth Negga in the leading role of Prince Hamlet. Cush Jumbo also played the role before in an acclaimed gender-blind version in 2021.
During her interview, Zegler further teased that she was working in a musical at the moment that she could not disclose. The 24-year-old described the project to The Standard as “a musical film I’m really excited about, and I wish I could tell you what it is because I’m working with some f***ing amazing people on it. But I can’t.”
Zegler could be portraying Gloria Estefan in a biopic, according to rumors from earlier.
Apart from this rumored biopic, Zegler will reportedly star in She Gets It from Me.
