The project reunites Hanks and Heller after their 2019 collaboration A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Both will also produce the film through their respective production companies.

The story centers on a fading sports journalist who rediscovers purpose when he encounters a pitcher recovering from a traumatic on-field injury. Marielle Heller wrote the screenplay, adapting Dave Eggers’ short story from his collection The Forgetters and shifting the setting from the San Francisco Giants to the New York Mets. Tom Hanks will play a pitching coach connected to the injured player.

Studios are actively bidding for the project, with Sony Pictures leading negotiations alongside Focus Features and another contender. The team plans to begin production in October, with Gary Goetzman and Leah Holzer producing.
