La Liga is preparing to roll out something never seen before in Spanish football, a full-scale retro-themed matchday that taps into nostalgia and club identity.
Across the weekend of April 10 to 13, clubs from both the first and second divisions will step onto the pitch wearing kits inspired by iconic designs from their past, in what is being positioned as a landmark promotional initiative.

The idea is simple but powerful. Football thrives on history, and La Liga is attempting to reconnect fans with the visual identity that defined different eras.
From classic stripes to vintage crests, most of the 38 participating clubs are embracing the concept fully, turning the matchday into a celebration of heritage.
However, not every club will be part of the spectacle in the same way.
Barcelona will not participate
Barcelona, however, find themselves on the outside of the retro movement, at least on the pitch.
As reported before, the Catalan giants were not prepared in time to design and produce a retro-inspired kit for the occasion, forcing them into a more conventional approach.

As a result, club sources have told Barça Universal that they will take to the field in their current 2024/25 home kit instead.
Next season, however, could see Barcelona fully embrace the concept with a design that pays tribute to one of their legendary eras.
Barcelona not alone
As such, Barcelona are not alone in this situation. Rayo Vallecano and Getafe are also unable to feature in retro kits due to similar logistical challenges.
Still, all three clubs remain part of La Liga’s broader promotional campaign, ensuring their presence is felt even if their shirts do not reflect the theme.
Real Madrid’s case, however, stands apart, as they have decided not to participate in the initiative at all.
Rather than adapting to the retro concept, they will simply wear their standard kit during the matchday.
