The Batman 2 Fans Are Sure Sequel Will Be Much Darker After New Photos

The cinematographer for The Batman 2 recently shared photos from the much-awaited sequel, which have convinced fans that it will have a much darker tone than the first. Erik Messerschmidt was brought on board as the new cinematographer after Greig Fraser exited the role in August 2025. The Batman 2 is scheduled for a release date in October 2027.

Cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt’s Instagram photos hype up The Batman 2 fans

The Academy Award-winning cinematographer recently posted photos from the upcoming Batman sequel on social media, and now fans are speculating that it will be much darker.

In the photos shared by Erik Messerschmidt on Instagram, fans can notice Gotham City from three different angles in The Batman 2.

Captioned “spring,” the first photo had a brownish-grey hue, whereas the second one, titled “northwest,” featured a dark teal shade. Moreover, the third photo, captioned “LEDs,” showcased a bustling, LED-laden Gotham.

Commenting on the images, a fan wrote on Instagram, “YOU AND MATT ARE GOING TO MAKE SUCH MAGIC!!!!!! Love this and the vibes!!!” Another user complimented the aesthetic and noted, “You’re capturing a dark mood like early industrial London with all its pollution…. Beautiful and eerie.”

Meanwhile, a third fan decoded the image in comparison to HBO’s The Penguin and the first Batman movie. They stated, “Really curious to see how this Gotham looks with Spherical Lenses tbh. It’s gonna be so unique and a nice contrast to the Anamorphic look that Part – I and The Penguin had.”

Furthermore, an Instagram user shared their excitement following the release of the images and commented, “If that’s how The Batman Part II is going to look like then I’M IN!”

Earlier, in September 2025, director Matt Reeves gave an update regarding The Batman: Part II. He told The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s been a journey that is taking longer than I would’ve wanted for a lot of reasons, a lot of personal reasons, but most important reason is getting it to a place where I just felt like it was the best script we could possibly write.”
