Galveston-area law enforcement agencies on Friday bolstered their presence along beaches and the Interstate 45 corridor in anticipation of a large number of students heading to the island for “Senior Skip Day.”
The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office and Texas City Police Department said in a joint social media post that they received information that “some individuals may be bringing illegal drugs and firearms into the area.”

The post included a photo of several recovered alcoholic drinks, firearms and drugs. Police also posted a photo of one young man being placed in handcuffs next to four other teens sitting on a curb.
Anyone found engaging in unlawful activity, in possession of illegal narcotics or firearms where prohibited, will be subject to law enforcement action, including arrest, police said.
“Parents are encouraged to speak with their kids about making responsible decisions and understanding the consequences of illegal activity,” the post read.
Police during last year’s “Senior Skip Day” detained six people and shut down several beaches after shots were fired and a firearm was recovered from the area.
By Friday afternoon, the Galveston Police Department closed beach access points on the west end of the island, citing “large crowds of young people and extremely heavy traffic in the area.”
